Poem #292 Former Hypocrites

We were all hypocrites

once upon a time.

You and I, we've lied and lied

so many times.

Oh, the towers we built with our deceit.

High and tall, almost touching the skies,

is this what Babel looked like?

A complex but fragile monument to self-delusions

torn down by truth.

We were all hypocrites

once upon a time.

Pretending to care

for the hurt and downtrodden,

our voices ringing through the night

complaining of injustices

but our compassion only lasting

as long as our limited attention span.

We were all hypocrites

once upon a time.

But for that reason for Christ's arrival and sacrifice

that our hearts might match our words

and our feet walk in truth.
